Lake Mary Prep, Circle Christian show way in 1A

LMP boys lead by 6; Circle’s girls up by 11

Imagine what Lake Mary Prep’s boys and Circle Christian’s girls golf team could have accomplished without the wind.

As it was as the Class 1A state tournament began Tuesday, those Sentinel coverage-area teams were plenty impressive.

Lake Mary Prep benefited from a 4-under-par 68 by Austen Truslow and 69 by Anton Serafini to shoot a 5-over 293 total and build a six-shot lead at Deer Island in Tavares. Abbey Carlson’s 3-under 69 and Samantha Wagner’s 70 sparked Circle Christian’s girls, who lead Lake Mary Prep by 11 shots after an even-par 288 at Harbor Hills in Lady Lake.

“I told the girls [after the round], ‘Don’t get complacent with where we are,’ ” Circle Christian coach Sean Richardson said. “‘If we do, we could lose everything we gained so far.’ ”

Carlson leads Wagner and Shannon Aubert, a former Windermere Prep golfer now at Hobe Sound Pine School, by one shot in the individual standings.

In the 2A boys tournament at Mission Inn (El Campeon course) in Howey-in-the-Hills, Derrek Drozdyk of Groveland South Lake is tied for sixth after shooting a 4-over 76. Lake Highland is second in the 2A girls tournament at Mission Inn’s Las Colinas course, 23 shots behind Plantation American Heritage’s 10-over 298.

Circle Christian’s girls are seeking their first state title, but it would be the fourth in a row for an area school. Windermere Prep won the past three.

Truslow is second in the 1A individual standings, one shot behind Kerry Sweeney of Melbourne Holy Trinity. Serafini is third.

“It wasn’t only drives and shots from the fairway affected by the wind,” Lake Mary Prep boys coach Steve Ira said. “There were a lot of putts being affected. I was impressed by Austen’s and Anton’s ability to just stay with it and slug it out.”

Circle Christian’s boys are in fourth place, seven shots behind LMP. Zach Hoskins and Timothy Colanta shot 73s for the Centurions.

“We’re happy with where we are,” said Scott Richardson, Circle Christian’s coach and Sean’s father. “We would have liked to have been four shots less, but that didn’t happen.”

And with any luck, won’t be as windy today.
