Scott wants ’Canes focused on finale

- Christy Cabrera Chirinos

Since taking over as Miami’s interim coach, Larry Scott has wanted his players to focus on the moment.

He hasn’t wanted the Hurricanes to dwell on some of their past disappointing losses and he hasn’t wanted them to look too far forward — and that applies to some of the third-year players who will soon have to make decisions about their respective futures.

After Saturday’s 38-21 win over Georgia Tech, redshirt sophomore Al-Quadin Muhammad was the first player asked about whether he’s given any thought to whether he’ll return to Miami for another season or declare for the NFL Draft.

Muhammad politely opted not to comment, saying he didn’t want to talk about that yet. Undoubtedly, other players, possibly including receiver Stacy Coley and cornerbacks Artie Burns and Corn Elder, will also have decisions to make as well, but Scott said it’s not time for that just yet.

“The thing I’ve done with the players is keep them in the place they’re in now. Nothing is more important and nothing is guaranteed to them but the day they have ahead of them,” Scott said.

Receiver Tyre Brady and tight end Stan Dobard were suspended for Saturday’s game against Georgia Tech, and after the win Scott did not comment on whether they would be available for Friday’s game at Pittsburgh. He declined again Sunday to say whether the suspensions would be for more than one game.

Next game: UM at Pittsburgh, noon Friday, ESPN2
