Hurricanes pull off 2nd surprise
Angel Rodriguez scored 19 points and Miami took down its second straight ranked opponent, beating No. 22 Butler 85-75 on Sunday night for the Puerto Rico Tipoff championship.
Ja’Quan Newton added 17 points for the Hurricanes (5-0), who followed their romp against No. 16 Utah by building a big lead again and then protecting it against a scoring burst from Kellen Dunham (23 points) and the Bulldogs (3-1).
Duke 86, Georgetown 84: Grayson Allen scored a career-high 32 points and the No. 5 Blue Devils beat the Hoyas to win the 2K Classic at Madison Square Garden.
Allen went 5 of 6 from 3-point range and 9 of 9 at the free-throw line. He also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals for Duke (4-1).
Isaac Copeland scored 21 points for Georgetown (1-3).
Villanova 75, Akron 56: Josh Hart had 27 points and nine rebounds to lead the Wildcats to victory in the NIT Season Tipoff.
Ryan Arcidiacono added 15 points, eight assists and five rebounds for Villanova (4-0).
Arizona 61, Northwestern State 42: Gabe York scored 18 points, including 10 in a late 12-4 run, as the No. 12 Wildcats (4-0) beat the undermanned Demons. Zack Woodley had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Northwestern State (0-4).
Utah 74, Temple 68: Brandon Taylor hit the go-ahead shot with 28.4 seconds left, lifting the No. 16 Utes (4-1) over the Owls (1-3) in the third-place game at the Puerto Rico Tipoff.
Utah’s Jakob Poeltl had 32 points and 11 rebounds, matching the second-highest single-game scoring total in Tipoff history.
Purdue 85, Florida 70: Rapheal Davis scored 18 points to lead five players in double figures as the No. 21 Boilermakers (5-0) beat the Gators (3-1) to win the Hall of Fame Tip-Off tournament. Florida’s John Egbunu had 19 points.
Oregon 73, Valparaiso 67: Dillon Brooks had 26 points, including eight straight during a key 12-2 second-half run, as the No. 25 Ducks (4-0) held off the Crusaders (5-1).
