City sues to dim Christmas display

PLANTATION — A South Florida city is suing to shut down a massive annual Christmas display in a South Florida couple’s front yard. But with the lawsuit stalled in the legal system, the light show in a Plantation suburb will go on this holiday season. The city has declared Kathy and Mark Hyatt’s display a nuisance because it draws hundreds of people each night. A hearing was postponed during the summer and hasn’t been rescheduled. So, for the third year in a row, police will shut down part of the road near the couple’s home, keeping cars away from a road that’s clogged with pedestrians looking at the lights.

Ex-doctor in sex sting gets 10 years in prison

A 69-year-old former doctor from South Carolina was recently sentenced to a decade in federal prison for trying to have sex with a teen girl in Central Florida. A federal jury in Orlando on Aug. 31 found John Francis Williams of Blythewood, S.C., guilty of using the Internet to attempt to persuade a minor to engage in sexual activity. Williams was a cardiac anesthesiologist when he was arrested in Volusia County during a 2012 online child-exploitation sting, documents say. Williams was staying at his Port Orange vacation home when he responded to a Craigslist ad on Oct.11, 2013. The ad had been placed by an undercover officer posing as the mother of a 14-year-old girl who was looking for a man to teach her child about sex.

Video released in deputy shooting

Cellphone video released on Monday shows the deputy-involved shooting of a mentally ill man attacking an Orange County Sheriff ’s Office corporal in August outside the World Wrestling Entertaining training center.

Armando Montalvo arrived at the center, 5055 Forysth Commerce Road, on Aug. 31 and attempted to get inside, deputies said. An injunction was filed against Montalvo, 29, for trespassing and he was barred from the premises, deputies said.

Authorities say he wanted to be a wrestler and had an obsession with one of the female WWE wrestlers.

The cellphone video shows Montalvo banging on the door and yelling inside before deputies arrive.

Cpl. Stephen Wahl and another deputy arrived on scene and started to yell at Montalvo to get on the ground. Montalvo ignored their commands. He then grabbed something on the ground before charging at Wahl.

Wahl retreated several feet before pulling out his gun and shooting Montalvo once.
