A suspect
is arrested in the New Orleans shooting of a Lake Brantley graduate.
The man wanted for shooting a Lake Brantley High School graduate in the stomach early Friday in New Orleans was arrested Monday following a citywide manhunt, police said.
Euric Cain, 21, was wanted on charges of armed robbery, second-degree kidnapping and attempted first-degree murder in the shooting that was captured in a chilling security-camera video that drew national attention.
Peter Gold, 25, whose family lives in Longwood, is a fourthyear medical student at Tulane University. His father, Dr. Robert S. Gold, is a longtime Maitland ophthalmologist.
According to a statement released by the Gold family, Peter Gold’s “condition continues to improve and [he] remains in guarded condition.”
The incident happened as Peter Gold was driving in the Lower Garden District of New Orleans at about 4 a.m. after leaving his job at an area hospital.
That’s when he noticed a woman being dragged by a man wearing a hooded sweatshirt. He slammed on his brakes and rushed out of his car to help her.
When Gold reached the woman, the man pointed a semi-automatic pistol and demanded that Gold give him money, according to reports. After Gold told him he didn’t have any money, the gunman fired one shot into Gold’s stomach.
Gold can be seen in the video falling to the sidewalk. As the victim lay writhing on the sidewalk, the man then pointed the gun at his head, but the weapon appeared to jam, police said.
The man then grabbed the purse of the woman he had dragged and drove away in a silver or gray SUV, police said.
News reports indicate that the woman was not injured. She has been cooperating with investigators.
On Sunday, the Gold family issued an update through Tulane University, said spokesman Mike Strecker.
“The Gold Family thanks everyone for their continued concern,” it reads.
