OPD: Drugs, gun found in man’s car with young kids
Orlando police say they arrested a 27-year-old dad after finding a loaded gun and drugs in his car along with his two children.
The kids, ages 1 and 6, were in the back seat and not in car seats when Orlando police stopped Omar Torres on South Bumby Avenue, just south of the intersection of Curry Ford Road, on suspicion of a tint violation, an arrest report states.
As they approached the white Acura shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday, Orlando law-enforcement officers said they saw the kids and noticed a “strong odor” of marijuana.
They also saw the pistol partially visible in a backpack on the front passenger floorboard, an arrest report states.
Officers searched the car and said they found 45 prescription pain pills and a small amount of marijuana in plastic baggies, along with a glass jar and scale with drug residue on them.
They also found the .38-caliber pistol loaded with an extended magazine, the report states.
Torres doesn’t have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, police said.
Officers then searched Torres, who had $1,750 in his front pant pockets, according to the Orlando police report.
Torres of Kissimmee told officers that all the items belonged to him and that he bought the prescription pills on the “street” for personal use.
Police said that the amount found “is commonly used for sale and distribution.”
Torres was booked into the Orange County Jail on charges of trafficking in hydrocodone, carrying a concealed firearm, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis, an Orlando police report said.
Court and jail records show he was released the next day on bail.
Police said Torres was also cited for illegal tint.
