Disney and Marvel announce
that Oscar winner Brie Larson will take on the role of Captain Marvel.
Oscar winner Brie Larson has a new title to add to her resume: superhero.
Disney and Marvel announced Saturday at ComicCon that Larson will star in “Captain Marvel” as the butt-kicking Air Force pilot Carol Danvers, who gets special powers after an alien encounter.
“Captain Marvel” will be the first film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to center on a female character. The film is set for a March 2019 release.
“Guardians of the Galaxy” writer Nicole Perlman and “Inside Out’s” Meg LeFauve are co-writing the screenplay. No director has been announced.
Larson won the Best Actress Academy Award this year for her performance in “Room.” She was onstage earlier in the day promoting the upcoming King Kong film, “Kong: Skull Island.”
In other Comic-Con news, Sigourney Weaver said Saturday that she’s hopeful about reprising her role as tough-as-nails survivor Ellen Ripley in another “Aliens” sequel.
The original star of the “Alien” film franchise told the crowd during a panel celebrating the 30th anniversary of the sci-fi sequel “Aliens” that “District 9” filmmaker Neill Blomkamp pitched her an idea for another installment when they were working together on his 2015 film “Chappie.”
“Four months later, I got a script that was so amazing and gives the fans everything they are looking for — plus innovates in a lot of ways,” Weaver said.
