Mainland wins shutout

Denzel Houston rushed for two of Daytona Beach Mainland’s three touchdowns in the second quarter as the visiting Buccaneers defeated DeLand 35-0 at Spec Martin Stadium.

Houston, who accounted for 148 total yards in the opening half, scored on runs of 11 and 10 yards as the topranked team in the Sentinel Super 16 asserted control after a scoreless first quarter.

Houston started the scoring with 9:24 remaining in the half after he scrambled 22 yards to put Mainland in the red zone. On the next possession, he connected with Jason Colubiale on a 50-yard strike that set up CJ Wilson’s one-yard TD run.

After recovering an onside kick, Houston made it 21-0 with 1:21 to play. Latavies Sylvester set up the score with a 25-yard run.

Mainland outgained DeLand 302 yards to 33 in the first half.
