James, Sweat return dates unclear

- Safid Deen

TALLAHASSEE — Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said is pleased with the recovery of star safety Derwin James after undergoing meniscus surgery two weeks ago.

Fisher did not elaborate on James’ expected return to action after initially saying James would miss five to seven weeks.

“He’s actually had a little bit of weight on it, which is shocking,” Fisher said. “I thought it would be another week, week and a half on that. But [the medical staff ] says he’s doing good. Whatever is in that Polk County blood.”

Fisher’s lighthearted comment alluded to James’ quick recovery time from previous injuries sustained during his career.

The coach said it’s too early to determine when defensive end Josh Sweat, who had meniscus surgery last week and expected to miss up to two weeks, will return.

■ True freshman Landon Dickerson and redshirt sophomore Brock Ruble seem to have solidified their starting roles on the offensive line. Dickerson and Ruble were listed as first-team right guard and right tackle, respectively, on FSU’s depth chart Monday.

■ Junior Rod Johnson was named ACC offensive linemen of the week Monday for his performance against USF. Johnson and the offensive line helped the Seminoles rush for 478 yards during the 55-35 victory.

■ FSU and UNC will wear Kidz1stFund helmet decals to raise awareness for Fanconi anemia research during the game. Next game: No. 12 FSU vs. UNC, 3:30 p.m. Saturday, ESPN
