Orange vs. Seminole for a cause

The new Backyard Blitz All-Star Challenge football game, set for Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Showalter Field in Winter Park, will have a halftime program that brings together football players ages 10-18 and law enforcement officers for a ceremony emphasizing mutual respect.

The game matching seniors from Orange County against Seminole County senior standouts is set for Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Showalter Field in Winter Park. It’s an expansion of the decades-old Orange County Senior Bowl game.

Former Senior Bowl MVP and Dr. Phillips, UCF and NFL player Doug Gabriel will headline the halftime program. Head coaches for the game are Trinity Prep assistant Dave Langdon for Orange and Hagerty head coach Phil Ziglar for Seminole. Both have been driving forces behind the Senior Bowl game for years. Cyrus Fagan was presented his honorary game jersey for the 2017 Under Armour All-America High School Football Game in a Monday ceremony at his high school. He is the first area player selected to play in the nationally-televised (ESPN) Jan. 1 game at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium. Buddy Collings

The Winter Park Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2016 includes former Wildcats David Shaw (1974, football, basketball, baseball); Charles “Chuck” Sandberg (1976, football, baseball); Mike Stephens (1980, football, basketball); Chad Wright (1996, football, weightlifting, track); Traci Heinl (2000, swimming, water polo); Michael Boles (2010, football, baseball) Patrick Mputu (2010, football, track) and Bob King (baseball head coach).
