Windermere rape suspect now faces more sex charges

- By Elyssa Cherney Staff Writer

More women are stepping forward to accuse a Windermere man charged with sexual battery of raping them and videotaping the act while they were unconscious, court records show.

Windermere police announced in June that Darryl Patterson, 50, had been arrested on three counts of sexual battery on an incapacitated person and three counts of sexual battery on a person unable to resist. The charges are related to the same victim and occurred at his home, police say, but they suspected the former real-estate broker took advantage of more women.

Documents filed last month in Orange County Circuit Court show law officers have identified two more victims from tapes Patterson kept. One is being investigated by the Brooksville Police Department in Hernando County, court records show. In the second case, Orange prosecutors have charged Patterson with sexual battery on a physically incapacitated person and attempted sexual battery.

“[T]he defendant has demonstrated a clear pattern of sexually abusing women,” Assistant State Attorney Kelly Hicks wrote in a motion to the court, asking that Patterson be held without bail until his trial.

Patterson has remained in the Orange County Jail since June 1, records show. His attorneys would not comment Thursday.

The investigation of Patterson dates to 2012, when a woman who used to live with him found videocassettes inside a briefcase showing Patterson engaging in sex acts with unconscious women. She gave it to Windermere police, but the small department, which was undergoing internal turmoil, did not follow up.

Former police Chief Daniel Saylor, 49, is serving an eightyear prison sentence for lying on the witness stand in the childsex trial of a friend.

The department, under new leadership, reopened the case in December 2014 after Patterson came to report he was a victim of fraud and police found the old evidence.
