’Canes looking to spark run game

- Christy Cabrera Chirinos

CORAL GABLES — During the Hurricanes’ three-game losing streak, Miami hasn’t been as effective running the ball as it was early in the season when Mark Walton and Joe

Yearby each rushed for scores against Florida A&M, Florida Atlantic, Appalachian State and Georgia Tech.

But as the Hurricanes look to snap their skid and try to get the offense on track, Miami coach Mark Richt said he still has confidence that Walton and Yearby can make a difference. Richt doesn’t expect to make any significant changes at the running back position Saturday at Notre Dame, though he did note that veteran Gus Edwards could get some additional touches.

“I think we have the right backs in there. I’m not saying Gus won’t get any work, because he has practiced well this week, so he might get some playing time,” Richt said. “But I don’t think there’s an issue with the runners. We just have to create more space and block better downfield.”

Miami is coming off its worst rushing performance of the season, with Virginia Tech holding the Hurricanes to just 42 rushing yards, a number that took a hit because of the eight sacks of Brad Kaaya.

Notre Dame, meanwhile, has allowed opponents an average of 180 rushing yards per game.

“From a running back’s standpoint, when we have an opportunity in the second level, or even the line of scrimmage, to make guys miss, we have to be productive,” said Hurricanes offensive coordinator and running backs coach Thomas Brown. Next game: UM at Notre Dame, 3:30 p.m. Saturday, NBC
