Edmonds earns first national team call-up
Versatile Orlando Pride playmaker Kristen Edmonds earned her first call-up to the U.S. women’s national team.
She will join Pride teammates Ashlyn Harris and Alex Morgan on the U.S. 24-player training camp roster ahead of two matches against Romania. The Americans will play Romania at 10 p.m. Nov. 10 at Avaya Stadium in San Jose, Calif., and at 9:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at StubHub Center in Carson, Calif. The first game will air on ESPN2 and the second will air on Fox Sports 1.
Edmonds, a 29-year-old Rutgers graduate, led the Pride with six goals during the team's first National Women's Soccer League season. She shifted seamlessly from her traditional defender role to midfielder and forward as needed throughout the year.
She was acquired by Orlando in a group trade that featured veteran Becky Edwards and Sermanni would later call Edmonds the steal of the challenging player acquisition process for Pride.
“This is a well-deserved reward for the outstanding season that Kristen had with our club. Her story is a great story for players in this league, showing the significance and importance of play in the NWSL,” Sermanni said in a statement released by the Pride. “This will not only be a great opportunity for Kristen, but also another chance for Alex and Ashlyn to see some competition during the long offseason.”
Harris is coming off a start for the U.S. against Switzerland, contributing to the Americans' 5-1 win while earning 10th international cap. She continues her battle to replace suspended goalkeeper Hope Solo atop the U.S. rotation in the net.
Morgan returns to U.S. camp after missing the Switzerland match.
The Romania matches are the final scheduled U.S. women’s national teams contests in 2016.
