Seminole hands Hagerty its first soccer defeat 3-0

-

Samuel Lugo had a goal and an assist to lead host Seminole to a 3-0 boys soccer win over area No. 1 Hagerty on Wednesday night.

It was the first loss of the season for the Huskies (15-1-1). Seminole, ranked No. 4 in the area, improved to 15-2-3.

The result gives both teams 11-1-1 records in Class 5A District 3 play.

Mathias Etoh and Ashton Neff also scored for the Seminoles, who led 1-0 at halftime.

“We had a good practice session yesterday and we learned a lot from our first game against Hagerty,” said 12th-year Seminole Coach Brian Emrick. “I’m very pleased with the way our team performed tonight.”

Seminole dropped a 1-0 loss at Hagerty on December 2, followed by a 2-2 tie at Oviedo. Since then, the ‘Noles have won eight straight games, five by shutout.

Seminole goalkeeper Noah Smith had seven saves in the win to give him 81 for the season and his seventh shutout.

Montverde Academy (11-1) fell from the ranks of boys basketball unbeatens when it lost to hometown Memphis East 75-73 on Saturday at the Penny Hardaway National Hoopfest in Tennessee.

It’s possible the Eagles could play Memphis East, which is coached by Hardaway, for the third time this season at this week’s Bass Pro Shops Tournament in Springfield, Mo. If both of those teams win quarterfinals tonight they will meet in a semifinal game on Friday night.

Montverde, which is No. 4 in the MaxPreps independent national rankings, faces a Missouri team, Kickapoo.

Also in the Bass Pro tournament are Findlay Prep (18-1) of Nevada, which is ranked one spot behind Montverde in the independent rankings; and nationally-ranked Sierra Canyon of California, which has national No. 1 junior Marvin Bagley III.
