MONTVERDE — Kizza Edward fueled Montverde Academy’s offense, scoring one goal on a header and bouncing in another off a defender, to help the national No. 1 Eagles win 3-2 over Louisiana power St. Paul’s in a Friday night semifinal of the Montverde Academy Soccer Tournament.

Montverde (21-0-1) plays Paramount, Calif., a 2-0 winner over The Woodlands, for the MAST title tonight.

The Eagles extended their nationalrecord unbeaten streak to 156 matches by winning a rematch of last year’s MAST championship game, which it won 5-0.

“We went up three goals and made some changes and let some guys play,” said Montverde coach Mike Potempa of St. Paul’s (17-2-1). “They fought to the end, and we knew that was coming.”

Josh Jackson scored first for the Eagles, taking a through pass and beating the St. Paul’s keeper 6:07 into the match.

Four minutes later, Jacob Bordon sent a long pass into the six-meter box, and Edward headed the ball into the top right corner to put the Eagles up 2-0.

Montverde made it 3-0 with 24:49 left in the half when Andre Castro crossed to Edward just right of the goal.

St. Paul’s put pressure on after the break and scored one minute into the second half.

Montverde then regained control, keeping pressure on until the end. Colin Mosier scored off a corner kick for St. Paul’s with 11 seconds left.

“I wasn’t pleased with the way the two goals were scored because they were on set pieces, one off a corner kick and one off a throw-in,” Potempa said. “That’s a lapse of concentration and a lapse of organization.”
