A teenage boy who was able to escape his home and call 911 on Thursday gave dispatchers chilling information: His father had just shot his mother and big brother, police said.

Just moments later, the shooter called Orlando police and spoke with crisis negotiators for about five or 10 minutes, police said, before finally surrendering at 1:21 p.m. He, too, told them that he had shot his wife and son.

Inside the charming home with a bay window and a twocar garage, police found the bodies of a woman in her 50s and a man in his 20s, police spokeswoman Michelle Guido said.

The home is in the 5800 block of Lake Champlain Drive off Lee Vista Boulevard, which neighbors describe as “familyfriendly.” It sits just northeast of Orlando International Airport and less than a quarter of a mile from Vista Lakes Elementary School.

It is the kind of place that neighbors say doesn’t often see much violence. Next-door neighbor Manuel Almovar, who used to walk the family’s dog, said he “got the chills” when he heard the news. He said he didn’t know of any problems in the home.

“I’m just shocked,” Almovar

said. “It’s devastating.”

Julie Orer lives two doors down from the home. She said the father was friendly; she would always see him with a cup of coffee in his hand or his dog on a leash.

Orer said he frequently greeted neighbors with a wave and warm smile as they passed by early each morning.

“This is a tight-knit community,” Orer said. “[The father] was always the first to say hello.”

The son who called police was often seen outside with a dog in the neighborhood with manicured lawns and a homeowners association, Orer said.

Orange County property records show the home is owned by Caryn Humelsine, but police have not named the suspect or victims of the crime.

“At face value, it seems to me like a domestic situation,” Guido said. “We don’t believe that other people are in danger at this point.”

Guido said the boy who called 911 did not suffer any physical injuries.

Vista Lakes Elementary School was briefly on lockdown during the incident, according to Vista Lakes PTA president Katie Ponall. She said she lives about 10 doors down from the site of the shooting and drove to the school Thursday afternoon because she was concerned about “kids walking home” among police officers and crime scene tape.
