A Seminole State College student was arrested after he threatened to hurt himself on the school’s campus, leading deputies to lock down the Sanford/Lake Mary campus Thursday morning.

The 27-year-old student, who is in the Adult High School GED program, came up to an instructor Thursday morning and started crying, deputies said.

“Thank you, I got to go,” the student said, according to deputies. The student said he was tired of life, then pulled his shirt up and pulled out a handgun, deputies said.

The instructor grabbed the gun from him, pulled out its magazine, and threw both into nearby woods, records show.

The two went into the instructor’s classroom.

The student got aggressive, as if he wanted to fight the instructor, deputies said. Then he went outside again to find the gun.

The instructor contacted campus security, who called deputies.

Deputies locked the campus down as a precaution as they looked for the student to make sure he was safe, Seminole County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kim Cannaday said.

They found the handgun, a 9 mm Kel-Tec, in some woods just before 9 a.m.

At about 10:12 p.m., the student turned himself in at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Seminole County.

Deputies lifted the lock down at about 10:30 a.m.

The student told deputies he bought the gun from someone deputies described as an “unknown individual” in January.

Deputies checked the gun's serial number and found that it had been reported stolen in Sanford in 2016, records show.

The student faces charges of possession of a weapon on school property and larceny of a firearm.

The campus is located northwest of U.S. Highway 17-92, south of Lake Mary Boulevard.
