Hornets goal-oriented

- By Jeff Gardenour

Four years of coaching under Reed Reynolds finally has the Bishop Moore Hornets in attack mode, and they’re not done yet.

A strong late-season surge has pushed Bishop Moore’s boys’ lacrosse team to an 11-2 record, including a perfect 6-0 mark in District 12. The Hornets are seeded No. 1 for the April district tournament, an event that could propel them to their first playoff berth since 2013.

“This is due to the effort of our players this season and hitting our statistical goals every game that we always review to see where we need improvement,” said Reynolds, whose squad is ranked No. 3 in the Sentinel Super Six and No. 8 in the LaxPower.com state poll.

“We strive to reach certain benchmark percentages every game in shots, clears, face-offs, turnovers, and so forth, and our players hold each other accountable to these stats.”

Bishop Moore hopes to soon reach another benchmark: a district championship and a playoff berth.

The Hornets look to be playoff-worthy after outscoring district opponents 106-11. Bishop Moore is 4-2 against schools that made the 2016 playoffs. Both losses have come to powerhouses: 14-11 to 2016 state runner-up Ponte Vedra and 11-10 to Lake Highland Prep, a state semifinalist last season.

Leading the Bishop Moore offense have been seniors Christian DiPaolo, Matthew Oyler and Parker Blystone, junior Robbie Bennett, and sophomores Jake Kiefer and Dillon Worrell.

On defense, senior Charlie Rask and juniors Will Jones and Mikey Randazzo, a goalie, have been stingy for the Hornets. 1. West Orange (14-0) (1) 2. Hagerty (12-1) (3) 3. Bishop Moore (11-2) (2) 4. Lake Highland Prep (10-5) (4) 5. Montverde (8-2) (5) 6. Lake Mary (9-3) (NR)
