Lake Highland has 4 national champs

Four members of Lake Highland Prep’s state title wrestling team won National High School Coaches Associatio­n championsh­ips over the weekend in Virginia Beach.

and each won national titles at a three-day event that is broken down into individual tournament­s for each grade level.

“He had a good gas tank too, so I just kept putting myself into the best positions I could,” Rogers said. “I was confident that I would come out on top if I just kept doing the things I always do and try not to make mistakes.”

Four-time Florida state champ Silva captured the 132-pound junior title for his third NHSCA championsh­ip. He could become the sixth wrestler to win four next season.

Byelick (160) also picked up a title in the junior division and Bele won the freshman 145-pound weight class. Lake Highland wrestlers

earned sophomore All-American status by taking fifth at 120 pounds.

Florida had eight national champions and 23 All-American. Only Pennsylvan­ia had more winners (10).

“I love to see the Florida guys do so well,” Rogers said. “As a young kid, people overlooked me for being from Florida and it wasn’t known as a wrestling state.”

Bishop Moore is paying respect to its baseball past Friday night.

The Hornets will celebrate the anniversar­ies of the 1967 and 2007 state championsh­ip teams during their game against New Jersey’s Don Bosco Prep at Joe Skinner Field at 7 p.m.

Returning players will be recognized in between innings and be presented with medals and commemorat­ive shirts.

Two perennial power boys tennis programs clash when undefeated Lake Mary (10-0) hosts Olympia (10-1) this afternoon at 3:30.

They played to a 3-3 regular season tie that could not be completed due to darkness a year ago. In a rematch in the opening round of the Class 4A state tournament at Sanlando Park, Olympia cruised to a 4-0 victory before losing in the semifinal round.

The match to watch this year pits training partners of Lake Mary and of Olympia vs. each other at No. 1 singles.

Don Bosco Prep is traveling from New Jersey to start its 2017 baseball season in Florida this weekend. The Ironmen play at West Orange on Thursday night before facing Bishop Moore on Friday in games that are listed as preseason dates for Don Bosco. Its regular season opener is at Apopka on Saturday at 1 p.m.
