Local spots get creative topping tots

Tater tots have grown beyond the barrel-shaped spuds we all remember from our childhood.

Everything from tofu to sriracha to macaroni and cheese now crown these typically fried grated potatoes.

There is even a festival in honor of them. The Tater Tots & Beer Festival will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday at Orlando Festival Park, 2911 E. Robinson St. in Orlando.

Tickets range from $37-$75 and can be purchased at tatertotfestival .com. About eight different types of tater tots will be served at the event.

If you miss out on tickets, never fear. You can make your own sampler of quirky tots (and one plain version), thanks to several Central Florida restaurants. Ave. in Orlando (407-894-2241; beefyking.com).

Wacky toppings for both tots and hotdogs make Doghouse an interesting dining experience. The College Park restaurant offers 11 types of loaded tots. Grab a small for $3.95, a large for $5.95 or a sampler of three styles for $5.95.

The Balsamic Blue Tots intrigued me on a recent visit. They are mixed with, you guessed it, a balsamic vinegar glaze and blue cheese crumbles. The glaze’s sweetness and cheese’s sharpness balance each other well.

Tots and bao? It is a match made in foodie heaven.

King Bao offers four creative takes on tots, from spuds tossed in truffle oil to topped with braised pork, cheddar cheese sauce, sour cream, scallions and jalapeno.
