Authorities search for at least 1 suspect following shooting

- By Stephanie Allen Staff Writer

One man was at large and another was in the hospital after being shot by an Orange County deputy while fleeing from a reported burglary in a neighborhood north of College Park on Thursday, authorities said.

Deputies confronted the men shortly after 11 a.m. outside a home on Malone Drive, said Capt. Angelo Nieves, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

One of the suspects, 18-year-old Myron Evans, was found injured in a home in the College Park neighborhood. He was treated at Orlando Regional Medical Center for a non-lifethreatening gunshot wound.

Authorities were still searching for at least one additional suspect Thursday night, and they asked residents in the Kingswood Manor and College Park neighborhoods to report anything suspicious.

It all started when Orange County Sheriff’s Cpl. Anthony Shea confronted the men after a resident called to report a burglary, Nieves said.

The suspects ran, Nieves said, and Shea saw one man jump into a white Lexus sedan. Shea yelled at the man to get out of the car, but the man did not and accelerated toward him, Nieves said.

Shea, a 10-year veteran with the Sheriff ’s Office, opened fire, Nieves said.

Deputies closed off the area to search for the suspects. A short while later, the Sheriff’s Office got a tip about a white vehicle abandoned on Yale Street in College Park, near Edgewater Drive. The car was later found to have been reported stolen from Belle Isle, deputies said.

Evans was found inside a home on Yale Street. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and is facing a burglary charge.

At least one additional suspect was still at large Thursday night. Nieves said authorities are using a helicopter and a sheriff ’s dog to search.

Police and deputies methodically searched homes on streets just north of Lake Adair, blocking off access to Edgewater Drive.

Carolyn Reis, who lives on New Hampshire Street, said she saw two men run across Dartmouth Park as she returned from walking her dog, Toby, about 11:30 a.m. The park is about two blocks south of where the car was abandoned at Yale and Edgewater.

She heard the ripping sounds of her neighbor’s pool screen being torn and police helicopters above. She went to call 911.

“By the time I called, they [the police] were swarming," she said.

Her neighbor said a window had been broken, but nothing was taken. The men got away.

Call records show Orlando Police also responded to the home on Malone Drive at 11:10 a.m. after getting reports that an officer needed help.

About the same time, several nearby schools were placed on lockdown.

Edgewater High School, College Park Middle School, Princeton Elementary School, Lake Weston Elementary and Lake Silver Elementary School were put on lockdown because of police activity, according to Orange County Public Schools spokeswoman Shari Bobinski. The lockdowns were lifted by 1:30 p.m.

Residents in the College Park neighborhood received an automated call from Orlando Police on Thursday afternoon, reporting two armed and dangerous robbery suspects in the area.

The call told residents to stay inside their homes.
