Candidates are rushing

to join the 2018 Florida governor’s race, but John Morgan is biding his time.

Candidates are jumping in left and right to run for Florida governor in 2018 — but John Morgan is in no hurry to join them.

Former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham, D-Tallahassee, announced her candidacy Tuesday, a day after state Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam of Polk County officially filed to run on the Republican side. Winter Park businessman Chris King and Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, both Democrats, have been running since early spring.

But Morgan — the last big name on the Democratic side, other than Miami beach Mayor Philip Levine — said he feels no pressure to join the crowded race soon. “Just the way I like it,” Morgan said in an email Tuesday. “All they do for one year is beg for money.”

The outspoken Orlando attorney had said he was considering a run for governor in November, after one of his fellow medical marijuana advocates started a draft petition called “For the Governor,” a play on Morgan’s “For the People” slogan. But he doesn’t have to make a final decision until as late as June 2018. And he said he does not have any timetable on when he might make his choice.

“I’ll watch and wait,” Morgan said. “[The] only thing getting in early does is keep people out.”

He added he was different from most of the already-filed candidates in that he had a life outside of politics. “All of those people have had their hearts set on it for years and years.”

On Tuesday, Graham revealed her intention to run in MiamiDade County, where she lived until she moved into the Governor’s Mansion at 15 when her father, Bob Graham, took office.
