Magic don’t get interview with Fultz

- By Josh Robbins

CHICAGO — Markelle Fultz’s time at the NBA Draft Combine was brief, and it did not include an interview with the Orlando Magic.

Fultz, a point guard who is arguably the draft’s top prospect, interviewed with some teams Wednesday, but the Magic were not among them. He will not speak with the Magic before he leaves Chicago today.

Magic officials wanted to interview Fultz, who played one season at Washington. But interviews at the combine typically are scheduled by the NBA. Sometimes teams do not get their first choices of interviews.

The Magic will have an 8.8 percent chance of winning the top overall pick during next week’s NBA Draft Lottery and a 9.7 percent probability of receiving the second pick. If either scenario occurs, the Magic no doubt would invite Fultz to visit Orlando for a workout and interviews with team officials.

The Magic’s combine delegation, led by interim GM Matt Lloyd and coach Frank Vogel, interviewed six prospects on Wednesday.

Those prospects were Kentucky shooting guard Hamidou Diallo, UCLA power forward T.J. Leaf, Baylor power forward Johnathan Motley, Creighton center Justin Patton, South Carolina shooting guard Sindarius Thornwell and Michigan big man Moritz Wagner.

The Magic have a total of 14 additional interviews scheduled for today or Friday.

The early stages of this year’s draft are expected to be heavy on point guards. In addition to Fultz, the list of point guard prospects includes UCLA’s Lonzo Ball, Kentucky’s De’Aaron Fox and North Carolina State’s Dennis Smith. Fox is attending the combine.
