Mariners made Cooke draft pick

Coastal Carolina junior centerfiel­der

a former Trinity Prep standout, upped his stock with a 2017 Sun Belt Conference player-ofthe-year season and was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the eighth round of the Major League Baseball draft.

Cooke, who was not drafted out of high school, was the 243rd overall pick.

He led the Sun Belt in batting average, on base percentage and runs scored in the regular season.

For the year, Cooke led Coastal in batting (.353), hits (71), runs (52), doubles (15), walks (38), times hit by pitch (16), on-base percentage (.479), slugging percentage (.587), sacrifice flies (6) and stolen bases (21). He ranked second in home runs (10) and third in RBI (38) as a leadoff hitter.

He was a third-team pick on the Perfect Game/Rawlings AllAmerica­n list.

Cooke also earned President's List academic honors with a 4.0 GPA) this spring.

Daytona Beach Mainland, Bishop Moore and Celebratio­n are among 14 teams signed up for the USA Football 7on7 Regional Championsh­ip at the Emery Hamilton Sports Complex (4400 W. Colonial Dr., Orlando).

Mainland saw a 37-game 7-on-7 winning streak that dated to last summer snapped when it lost to Tampa Plant 14-0 in the final of UCF’s initial camp earlier this month.

Pool-play games are set for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., followed by single-eliminatio­n bracket play from 3-6. Region tourneys serve as qualifiers for USA Football’s 7on7 National Championsh­ip Series in July.

USA Football is the sport’s national governing body and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Four Orlando-area teams won U.S. Youth Soccer Florida State Championsh­ips and are headed to the upcoming Region III Championsh­ips. Those state winners are the ACYS Spirit United B2000 (17U) and B1999 (18u) boys squads, and the girls teams of OCYS 2004 (13U) and Oviedo’s FKK 99 Florida Krush Black (18U). Region play is June 23-29 in Greensboro, N.C.
