Frozen treats that will get you through summer

-

No Central Florida local or visitor will ever want for frozen treats because our area is well-stocked with cafes that are scooping, scraping and churning out the perfect summer indulgence.

Here are just a few of my favorite spots for some melty goodness. You can find a photo gallery filled with frozen confections at salashawaiian.com).

SnowBean Cafe is a fairly new Korean dessert eatery that serves patbingsu, a shaved ice dessert that can have chopped fruit, cereal, condensed milk and more mixed into it. Try one at 5310 E. Colonial Drive in Orlando (407-270-8811; Facebook).

Watch the show at Mr. Cool Ice Cream, 6550 International Drive, Suite 104, in Orlando (321-352-7977; Facebook) or 5Fx Ice Cream (various locations; 5fxicecream.com /ice-cream).

I’m using “sandwiches” loosely — you won’t only find the traditional cookie bookending fun ice cream flavors here.

Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream is known to sandwich its frozen confection between cookie dough, waffles, taco shells and more. Keep an eye on its Facebook page for latest creations. Or just stop by 3114 Corrine Drive in Orlando (321-226-8685; kellyshomemadeice cream.com).

At Sprinkles in Disney Springs, ice cream gets stuffed between cupcakes in a sandwich ($7.95) that requires a cup and spoon to eat. Pair mint chip ice cream with a dark chocolate cupcake (or find your own combination) at 1600 Buena Vista Drive in Lake Buena Vista (407-560-9192; sprinkles.com).

Ice cream with no milk? Sounds crazy, but it works. DaJen Eats, a local company that makes and promotes vegan cooking, churns out dairy-free desserts called Irie Cream. The frozen treat somehow retains the creamy, lush texture of conventional ice cream.

You can find Irie Cream in a scoopable form as well as half pints at The District Market at Mills 50. Irie is also part of a vegan doughnut dessert at Valkyrie Doughnuts. Or, order a half-pint online to be delivered at your home at dajeneats.com.
