Isaac, Iwundu set for summer league

-

Lead Orlando Magic assistant coach

has been around the NBA long enough to know not to put too much stock in a rookie’s summer league performance.

“You can have a great summer league and it’s no predictor on your career,” Forcier said. “And you can look really poor and it’s no predictor on your career.”

That said, the Magic would prefer to have forward and wing play well in over the next few days.

Isaac and Iwundu will make their professional debuts when the Magic open their Orlando Pro Summer League schedule this afternoon.

Isaac, chosen sixth overall, will be the league’s highest-drafted rookie this year.

The Magic are trying to bring him along slowly.

What does he hope to accomplish?

“Just learning,” Isaac said. “Focusing on doing what the coaches ask you to do. The biggest thing is effort — coming out here and giving everything you’ve got.”

Isaac’s play should occupy Magic fans’ attention in the days ahead.

Here are some of the other storylines to watch. COMMENTARY

drafted eighth overall, won’t play in the New York Knicks’ opener because of a bruised right knee and might miss additional time. Point guard

picked ninth by the Dallas Mavericks, won’t play in Orlando but will play on the Mavericks’ NBA Summer League team in Las Vegas.

Guard selected 11th by the Charlotte Hornets, is doubtful to play because of a sprained left ankle.

Key rookies who are expected to play include Detroit Pistons wing

and Miami Heat big man

Iwundu played four seasons at Kansas State, where he earned a reputation as a tenacious defender.

“Guys are out there fighting for their lives, trying to put food on the table, so it’s different,” Iwundu said. “You want to go out there and give it your all every day.”

The Magic would like to see what else he can offer in the days ahead.

“You just see a maturity in him, a level of poise,” Forcier said. “He’s obviously had a longer college career, so you can see that he’s got some of the benefit of having been a college player longer. He’s very comfortable with the ball in his hands and can handle the pick-and-roll. He plays under control [with] a lot of poise, and you can see he has a skill level that can grow.”

Isaac isn’t the only FSU alumnus who’ll play in Orlando. Second-round pick

is on the Hornets’ roster, while undrafted rookie the Heat. is on the

Knicks’ roster. Second-year forward will play for Center and wings

and are on the Magic’s roster, and all three of them are fighting for regular-season roster spots.

The Magic seem likely to keep Zimmerman, their second-round pick last summer.

Georges-Hunt’s and Garino’s salaries for the upcoming season won’t become guaranteed until opening night of the regular season.
