Heart procedure sidelines Francona

CLEVELAND — Terry Francona underwent a procedure Thursday to correct an irregular heartbeat, and it will prevent him from managing in the All-Star Game next week.

The Indians said Friday that Francona, 58, was resting comfortably. He is expected to be discharged this weekend and resume managing after the AllStar break.

Francona had been experiencing dizziness, fatigue and a rapid heart rate. He twice left games last month after falling ill and has been hospitalized and undergoing tests since Tuesday. Francona, in his fifth year with the Indians, was admitted after doctors detected an arrhythmia from a monitor he has been wearing for several weeks.

His health problems will prevent him from managing the American League squad next week in Miami. Indians bench coach Brad Mills, who has been filling in while Francona has been ill, will handle the AL team, which includes five Indians players. Mills will be assisted by the Indians’ staff and Rays manager Kevin Cash, who previously worked for the Indians.

Seven replacement players were named for Tuesday’s game. Added to the AL roster were Mariners 2B Robinson Cano, Tigers OF Justin Upton, Rays RHP Chris Archer, Blue Jays RHP Roberto Osuna, Astros RHP Chris Devenski and Twins RHP Brandon Kintzler. Dodgers LHP Alex Wood was added in the NL.

Three original All-Stars are on the DL: Angels OF Mike Trout, Yankees 2B Starlin Castro and Astros LHP Dallas Keuchel. Four pitchers won’t be active because they are starting Sunday: Dodgers LHP Clayton Kershaw, Rangers RHP Yu Darvish, Indians RHP Corey Kluber and Tigers RHP Michael Fulmer.
