Child death suspect convicted of abuse in 2005

- By David Harris

One of the women accused in last week’s deadly beating of a 3-year-old boy pleaded guilty to child abuse more than a decade ago, after she used a plastic golf club to hit another boy, records show.

Callene M. Barton, 58, was arrested Friday on a first-degree murder charge in the death of Xavier Mokarzel-Satchel at Eagle Landing apartments in Pine Hills.

Investigators say Barton took Xavier by the arm and leg and threw him down a hallway after her daughter, Lakesha Lewis, hit him with a plastic wand from window blinds until it broke. The boy was being punished for taking a drink of milk from a jug, Orange County deputy sheriffs said.

Xavier was pronounced dead at Arnold Palmer Hospital.

In 2005, Barton was staying at the Coalition For the Homeless in downtown Orlando when a fellow guest asked her to discipline her child because he was rude when she tried to wake him for school, court records show.

According to a police report, Barton picked up a plastic golf club and started hitting the boy all over his body.

He was not seriously injured, but he ended up with several welts on his back and legs.

“Callene stated that she knew she was wrong but ... she was raised to discipline children who are disrespectful to adults,” the report states.

She pleaded guilty in 2006 and was sentenced to two days in jail with credit for time served, plus a year of show.

Lewis, 28, also was arrested Friday on a first-degree murder charge,

Xavier’s mother, Brandi Mokarzel, 23, was taken to jail on a child-neglect charge because she didn’t remove him from the dangerous environment, a report states.

Deputies say Mokarzel moved to Florida with Xavier four months ago and has been dating and living with Lewis and her mother ever since. probation, documents
