Woman passes out on Disney’s Avatar attraction

- By Gabrielle Russon

A 31-year-old woman felt dizzy and briefly passed out on the 3-D Flight of Passage attraction at the new Pandora — the World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, said a report released Tuesday.

The woman’s June 24 medical problem was one of several issues reported by the theme parks, which are required to disclose any ride-related injuries or illnesses requiring an immediate hospital stay of at least 24 hours.

A 79-year-old woman who had a pre-existing condition also became ill after riding the same Pandora simulator June 12, according to the report, which covered theme park incidents between April and June.

On Flight of Passage, the concept places riders on a flying predator called a banshee, which takes visitors on a simulated trip above Pandora. The attraction is similar to the Soarin’ ride at Epcot, but with more multisensory effects and no dangling feet. In other incidents reported: A woman, age 47, fainted on the Incredible Hulk Coaster at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure on June 20.

A 48-year-old woman with a pre-existing condition had a seizure May 14 on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, a roller coaster at Disney’s Magic Kingdom.

On the Kilimanjaro Safaris ride in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a 19-year-old woman with a pre-existing condition also had a seizure June 10.

In April, a 57-year-old woman with pre-existing conditions reported stroke-like symptoms at Castaway Creek at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon.

Also in April, an 18-year-old woman had motion sickness on the Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts roller coaster.

An 81-year-old reported the same issue on Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey.

A 54-year-old man reported a shock to his arm on the Journey to Atlantis water roller coaster ride at Sea World on June 15.

There were no issues reported at Legoland Florida or Busch Gardens.

Theme parks report these incidents to the state each quarter as part of a deal major theme parks made to avoid inspections.
