Two-sport star Hinson leaves Deltona

- By Buddy Collings

Two-sport prospect

a 6-foot-7, 240-pound specimen heading into his junior year, said he will not be at Deltona High School this year.

Hinson, who holds major college offers for both basketball and football, told the Sentinel on Tuesday that he is trying to finalize a decision that will likely take him to one of several out-of-state high schools that have highly-regarded basketball programs.

Football practices for Florida schools open Monday, but Hinson is busy playing basketball with his Showtime Ballers travel team today through Sunday in Las Vegas.

Hinson’s departure closes a chapter on Deltona’s best boys basketball run in school history. His father,

stepped down as the Wolves’ boys basketball coach following last season, which ended with a region semifinal loss to Edgewater.

In 2015-16, with Blake starting as a freshman alongside his brother,

Deltona went 21-9 and reached the state final four for the first time. A year earlier the Wolves were 24-5 and captured the school’s first district title when Evan was a standout junior and Blake was playing varsity ball as an eighth grader at Warner Christian of South Daytona.

Like Evan, who signed with South Carolina in 2016 and played both football and basketball as a freshman, Blake is being recruited as a tight end by a number of colleges and as a burly, powerful player with deep shooting range by basketball programs. He averaged an area-leading 28.9 points per game last season.

Hinson’s list of scholarships offers includes Boston College, Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, Michigan, North Carolina, St. John’s, South Carolina, UCF and Wichita State, according to recruiting sites.

He said he added offers from Clemson and second-year Georgia Tech coach last week.

“A lot of schools offer me but don’t say you can play both sports,” Hinson said. “FSU offered me in both sports, but not to play both. UNC did say I could play both.

“I can’t tell you which sport I’ll sign for because I don’t feel like my recruitment is over.

“I’m going to make my decision when I’m a senior. I’ve got to wait till it’s all finalized.”

Hinson has put up numbers all spring and summer for the Showtime.

The AAU boys basketball Super Showcases, running today through Sunday at Disney’s Wide World of Sports and the Orlando Sports Center, will put players in all four high school grade levels on stage for college recruiters in the final NCAA “live” period of July.

UCF figures to again have an eye on Bishop Moore’s a 6-3 rising junior guard.

coach of the Team MOAM Adidas 16U travel team Cattoor plays for, said UCF coaches were in South Carolina and Georgia to see every game the team played in the previous two live periods this month. Joseph said Knights head coach was on hand for one of those games.

“Hunter is tough, tenacious, great basketball IQ, plays hard,” Joseph said. “He makes winning plays. Coaches love that.” Dr. Phillips rising senior guard

Team MOAM reached the final four in last week’s Best of the South 17s tournament with all of its players, aside from Love, playing up an age group. They are playing in the tough 17s Gold division this week and open tonight at 6:30 at Disney.

Team Parsons Gauntlet 2019, with 6-7 of the new Windermere High School and top players from Kissimmee Osceola’s state title team, is also playing up in 17 Gold.

The 6-3 Team Breakdown 17U guard flew in from the Under Armor All-American Camp in Philadelphia at midnight and appeared to be weary in a Friday afternoon loss to Louisiana Elite. He scored 13 of his 17 points in the second half of that game with the outcome already decided.

But against another highly-rated opponent, the New York Lightning, Simons lit it up. The Louisville commit scored 26 points in the first half and finished with 45.

Simons went 7-for-9 on 3-point shots in the victory and capped his scoring spree with a spectacular dunk.
