Magician: Have Chihuahua, will travel

-

Piff the Magic Dragon played Orlando Improv last year, but the “America’s Got Talent” magician has fired up a totally new act for his return.

“Every single trick is different from beginning to end for Orlando,” said Piff, who plays the Improv today through Sunday.

That’s true, too, for Mr. Piffles, who is doing “The Dog Who Knows,” a new mind-reading act. “He demonstrates beyond any reasonable doubt that he is a clairvoyant Chihuahua,” Piff said.

Mr. Piffles is running around the floor while Piff talks from Las Vegas. “We’ve been together for eight years now — my longest relationship,” Piff said. “He likes lying out in the sunshine of Las Vegas because him and I both grew up in the U.K. where it wasn’t as sunny and warm as it is here.” (Piff ’s real name is John van der Put, and he’s from London.)

How does Mr. Piffles’ mind-reading work? “The dog takes questions from the audience, any questions, and he answers them,” Piff said. “Then he ends by healing a relationship in the audience. He’s not there just to show off his parlor tricks.”

At every show, the dog finds a couple experiencing some tension.

“A lot of other magicperforming animals, all they’re interested in is their ego and getting as much applause as they can. Not Mr. Piffles,” Piff said. “He’s a force for good.”

Piff has extended his residency at the Flamingo in Las Vegas through 2018.

“In Vegas, audiences from all over the world come to you, so you get a whole mix of people,” he said. “I love how diverse the audiences are and … they still want to laugh at one thing.”

Until November, he is splitting his time between playing Las Vegas and going on the road. Then he returns to the Flamingo for six weeks straight. Fans see a totally different show on the road from the one in Las Vegas, Piff said.

Orlando fans will not see David Copperfish, Piff ’s mind-reading goldfish “I think we had Criss AngelFish when we came to Orlando last time,” Piff said. “Then I saw Criss Angel’s show and was sort of offended by it. It became David Copperfish.”

But in Orlando, Piff will have his squire, Francis, as sidekick. “Never have I found a creature more desperate for work than Mr. Piffles until now,” Piff said. “He plays a mean lute and is also questioning his sexuality onstage. It’s difficult finding a place for a squire in contemporary society, especially when you wear a tunic.”

Piff also will be accompanied by comedian Stuart Edge, a YouTube favorite who delivers a 15-minute act.

The Magic Dragon’s show comes in different varieties: 13 and up, 18 and up, 21 and up. Every show in Orlando will be 21 and up.

“It’s the most carefree version,” Piff said. “For some reason we get people who want to heckle. They don’t want to do it in a mean way.
