Magic cut loose swingman Garino

- By Josh Robbins

The Orlando Magic waived swingman Patricio Garino on Tuesday, clearing the way for Garino to attempt to join another team after it became clear that he had little chance of making the Magic’s regular-season roster.

Garino and fellow swingman Marcus Georges-Hunt were expendable because the Magic bolstered their depth on the wings this offseason. Evan Fournier, Terrence Ross and Mario Hezonja already were on the roster. In June, the team drafted Wesley Iwundu early in the second round. In July, the team signed Jonathon Simmons and Arron Afflalo to free-agent deals.

The Magic waived Georges-Hunt on Monday.

Garino and GeorgesHunt were signed in early April during the tenure of former general manager Rob Hennigan.

Garino, a 24-year-old native of Argentina, attended Montverde Academy and appeared in five games for the Magic before last season ended.

But he may be best known as the player photographed in front of a whiteboard as he signed his contract — a whiteboard that included the names of potential Magic offseason targets.

Garino and GeorgesHunt had contracts that were not guaranteed for the 2017-18 season.

Orlando’s roster now stands at 15 players, but the team still may sign additional players for the preseason to non-guaranteed contracts.

The Magic also may sign two players to two-way contracts.

A player signed to a twoway contract will spend the bulk of the season with his NBA team’s minor-league affiliate.

But a two-way contract also allows the player to spend up to 45 days on the NBA team’s roster during the NBA regular season, in addition to time on the NBA team’s roster before the start of G-League training camps and following the conclusion of the G-League regular season.
