The Saints signed Murray on Aug. 6 to compete against incumbent kicker Wil Lutz, but they waived him on Aug. 12. He played 16 games with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2014 and made 83 percent of his attempts. He played two games with the Cleveland Browns last season.
Carpenter was with the Buffalo Bills for the past three seasons. He began his career in 2008 with the Miami Dolphins, playing five seasons with the franchise before going to Buffalo in 2013.
A disappointed and disgusted Marrone also opened the starting quarterback position for competition, matching incumbent Blake Bortles against challenger Chad Henne.
The position is “up there for grabs and either person can take it,’’ Marrone said. “It’s very simple: Who is the best person to put in that position?’’
Five days before the Carolina preseason game (universally viewed as the starters’ last tune-up) and 22 days before the season opener at Houston, the Bortles Era could be on ice because Marrone is on the cusp of committing to the 32-year old Henne.
“I think [Henne] deserves the opportunity,’’ Marrone said.
Bortles is 11-of-18 passing for 81 yards and a 71.8 rating in the preseason. His four drives against Tampa Bay all ended with a punt. Henne is 11-of-16 for 183 yards, one TD and a 127.9 rating.
