Knights brush off jersey dispute with Panthers

-

UCF and FIU got into a bit of uniform dispute that fired up fans before kickoff Thursday night.

The Panthers asked the Knights if they could wear white jerseys at home last season and UCF coach

agreed to accommodate them.

UCF asked FIU to return the favor this season, with fans set to also wear white to the game. After initially agreeing, Panthers coach

backed out and decided his team would wear white as the visiting team on a hot Orlando evening.

The Knights adjusted and trotted onto the field wearing anthracite jerseys and had no trouble pummeling the Panthers clad in white jerseys.

UCF’s uniforms have generated considerable attention during Frost’s tenure.

The Knights debuted a wide range of new uniforms looks last season, much to the delight of the players and fans. Frost said fans shouldn’t expect dramatic changes this season.

“We have a couple of new things that we’re going to roll out this year, but for the most part, the guys liked our look last year and we’re going to keep building off that,” he said. “We’re not going to be able to completely change our style every year or every game.

“To be honest, that’s the last thing on my mind. I want our players to play well. Hopefully, I could put them in overalls and coveralls and they could play well. Guys love to look good.”

a true freshman receiver from nearby Sanford Seminole High, drew the starting assignment at one wide-receiver spot for UCF and promptly scored his first collegiate touchdown on a 10-yard pass from quarterback in the second quarter. The catch gave UCF a 21-10 lead.

Davis also caught two passes on the Knights’ opening scoring drive. He had a 26-yard reception on the fourth play from scrimmage. He added a seven-yard catch one play later that kept the opening drive moving and helped UCF jump out to an 8-0 lead just two minutes and 17 second into the game.

For Davis to draw the starting nod did not come as that much of a surprise. He drew high praise from UCF coaches throughout training camp and his knowledge of the playbook upon arrival on campus was impressive for a newcomer.

Just two weeks after arriving on campus at UCF as a transfer from Garden City (Kan.) Community College,

was already on the field contributing on the Knights’ special teams. He fielded two punts in the first quarter and showed off his dynamic play-making ability with a 43-yard return on his first touch.

Hughes also broke up a pass at cornerback and forced a fumble. He is expected to see more reps at corner as the season progresses. THURSDAY’S BOX
