Edgewater snaps skid on a stormy night

Quondarriu­s Whitfield scored three touchdowns and host Edgewater snapped a 12-game football losing streak with a 28-0 win over Colonial on Friday night.

The Eagles (1-1) racked up 244 yards of total offense in a game that was called at halftime due to inclement weather.

“So proud of the guys,” first-year Edgewater head coach Cameron Duke said. “It’s all on them, the work they’ve put in [during] practice, the work they’ve put in since we’ve been here.”

Whitfield caught touchdown passes of 59 and 2 yards, and also scored on a 6-yard run. He had three catches for 67 yards.

Edgewater quarterbac­k R.J. Harvey completed all six of his passes, for 90 yards and two touchdowns, and led the Eagles with 85 yards rushing on seven carries. Isaiah Connelly added 69 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

The Edgewater defense held Colonial (0-2) to minus-25 yards of total offense, and did not allow a pass completion.

A Super 16 showdown matching No. 4 Dr. Phillips (1-0) at No. 16 Timber Creek (1-0) was called at 8 p.m. after more than an hour of lightning and rain delays.

School officials reschedule­d the game for Monday, Oct. 30. Game time is to be determined.

Eric Doctor returned two intercepti­ons for touchdowns as Evans won 34-6 over Orlando University (0-2) at home to go to 2-0 for the first time since its district title team of 2011 won its first seven games.

“We’re a young team, and we got some younger guys that are used to winning in the youth leagues,” Evans coach Greg Thompson said. “If we continue like this we can compete against more of the seasoned programs.”

The Trojans matched their win total (2-8) from last season.

No. 6 Wekiva (2-0) won 49-0 at home against first-year Windermere High School (0-2) in a game that was abbreviate­d due to the inclement weather.

West Orange (1-0) won 14-0 at Freedom (0-2) in a game that went just one half.

Mount Dora Christian improved to 2-0 with a 17-0 win over Tampa Bayshore Christian in a game that also was called to an end at halftime.

Lightning and heavy rain caused the Apopka-Miami Norland game to be suspended at halftime with the Blue Darters, ranked No. 1 in the Sentinel Super 16, leading the Vikings, 14-6.

The teams couldn’t agree on a time to re-start the game, but the Norland administra­tion said the Vikings (1-0) would return to play Apopka (1-0) later in the season to finish the second half.

Under the FHSAA’s new playoff system, the outcome of every regular-season game counts toward teams qualifying for the postseason. There are rules in place to deal with games that are not finished.

During the two quarters that were played, Apopka’s Jecoryan Davis-Hamilton led the Blue Darters in rushing with 147 yards and two touchdowns, the final one with 31 seconds remaining in the first half.

The sophomore darted 13 yards for Apopka’s first score in the opening period. Chance Bush ran in the two-point conversion to give the Blue Darters an 8-0 lead.

The Gateway (0-1) at Harmony (1-0) game will be completed today at 11:30 a.m. Harmony took a 7-0 lead on the opening possession before play was halted.

The No. 12 Hagerty (1-0) at Winter Springs (0-1) game was wiped out due to lightning and wet field conditions. The makeup date is to be determined.

Super 16 No. 8 Orange City University (0-1) traveled south to Sebastian River (0-1) for a game that also never got started. The Titans will not reschedule that trip.

Flagler Palm Coast (1-0) at New Smyrna Beach (1-0) was reschedule­d for tonight at 7:30.

No. 2 Mainland (1-0) will play visiting St. John’s Bartram Trail (0-1) on Monday night at 7 at Municipal Stadium.

South Lake leads 13-0 over host Lake Minneola in a game that will be finished on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Cypress Creek (1-0) at East River (1-0) game was pushed back to Tuesday, Sept. 26.

Cocoa Beach (0-1) at Trinity Prep (1-0) is reschedule­d for Oct. 6.

Crescent City (1-0) and host Pine Ridge (1-0) plan to play their game in Week 11 in Deltona.
