Davidson helps Kowboys roll again

- By J.C. Carnahan

Davidson had a big night on the biggest of stages when it comes to high school football in Osceola County.

Davidson rushed for four touchdowns Friday as host Osceola ran away with another lopsided win over its long-time rival, St. Cloud.

The Kowboys (2-0), ranked No. 3 in the Sentinel Super 16, complied over 400 yards of offense in Kissimmee and rolled past the Bulldogs 47-14.

It’s the sixth time Osceola has scored more than 40 points in the series since 2011.

“I take it pretty seriously, all the tradition with it, because we’ve been playing them since the 1920s,” Davidson said. “I just like to keep it going, and now I’ve never lost to them.”

Osceola has now won 13 in a row over St. Cloud (0-2), including an overtime win by the Bulldogs that was later forfeited. St. Cloud won back-to-back outings in 2004 and 2005.

The game was halted and delayed nearly 90 minutes due to lightning late in the first quarter with Osceola out front 14-0. The layoff did little to slow the KowMalcolm boys as they returned to the field and extended their advantage to 27-7 by halftime.

A pregame ceremony was held in memory of Kissimmee Police Department officer Matthew Baxter and Sergeant Richard “Sam” Howard, a 2000 Osceola graduate and multisport athlete, who lost their lives in the line of duty two weeks ago.

St. Cloud turned the ball over on downs three straight times in the third quarter on Friday. Osceola answered with touchdowns each time.

A 21-yard run for a score by Bernie Velez made it 47-7 and instituted a running clock.

Davidson rushed nine times for 177 yards, scoring for the final time on a 30-yard carry on his first and final touch of the second half. He also broke loose for an 86-yard score with a little more than three minutes to play before the halftime break.

Seth Johnson led St. Cloud with six catches 109 yards and a touchdown.

Johnson made a reception along the sideline from Colt Smith and turned up field for 68 yards to get the Bulldogs to within 21-7 with five minutes left in the second quarter.

Charles Robinson rushed 17 times for 73 yards and the final touchdown of the night.
