Miami cuts Hewitt, Young

(Nevada-Las Vegas), safety Maurice Smith (Georgia), linebacker Chase Allen (Southern Illinois) and punter Matt Haack (Arizona State).

Guard Ted Larsen, who is sidelined with a biceps injury, remains on the roster for now.

However, Larsen seems a candidate for the injured reserve/designated to return list.

Cornerback Tony Lippett (Achilles) and linebacker Raekwon McMillan (knee) were placed on the injured reserve list.

The bottom part of the Dolphins’ 2016 draft class also took a hit as three members – cornerback Jordan Lucas, a sixthround pick, quarterback and North Broward Prep grad Brandon Doughty and tight end Thomas Duarte, both seventhround picks – were waived.

All three could be brought back to the Dolphins’ 10-man practice squad.

This was the first year the NFL used a single cutdown day to go from a 90-man roster to a 53-man roster. Previously there was a cut from 90 to 75, and then 75 to 53.

As a result of the new way of doing things, more than 1,100 players were released, most Saturday but some Friday, after leaguewide Thursday’s preseason finales.

That means players on the roster Saturday might not necessarily be there Monday or Tuesday, after teams scour the waiver wires to see who is available.

At quarterback there was no surprise as both Doughty and David Fales were waived. There’s a chance Doughty is brought back to the practice squad.

At running back, Storm Johnson, the former UCF and University of Miami player, was released, giving injured Senorice Perry, slowed recently by a knee injury, the inside track on the fourth spot. DeVeon Smith, an undrafted rookie from Michigan, was also waived.

At wide receiver it appears Rashawn Scott, the former UM standout, will be put on the Physically Unable to Perform list due to the foot injury he sustained in the offseason. Malcolm Lewis, also a UM product, Mitch Mathews, Rashad Lawrence, Trey Griffey, son of Hall of Fame baseball player Ken Griffey Jr., Damore’a Stringfellow and Drew Morgan waived.

At tight end, Duarte and Chris Pantale were waived.

On the offensive line, in addition to Sam Young’s release, Sean Hickey, Avery Young and Isame Faciane were waived.

In the secondary, in addition to Lucas, cornerbacks Lafayette Pitts and Larry Hope and safety A.J. Hendy were waived.

At linebacker, in addition to Hewitt, Deon Lacy and Junior Sylvestre were waived and Brandon Watts was waived/injured.

On the defensive line, Julius Warmsley, Joby Saint-Fleur, Cameron Malveaux, and Laerence Okoye were waived while Nick Williams was released.

On special teams, Darr and long snapper Winston Chapman were waived.

Safety T.J. McDonald, who was signed to a fouryear, $24 million contract Saturday despite being suspended for the first eight games of the season, doesn’t count against the 53-man roster.

The Dolphins are thought to be seeking offensive linemen, linebackers and running backs on the waiver wire. have been
