Hornets win with drama

-

Lake Brantley receiver Angel Thomas stole a potential interception away from Bishop Moore for a spectacular — and controversial — touchdown catch with 40.6 seconds remaining to bring the Patriots to within one point of the Hornets on Saturday.

But as it had done all morning after resuming Friday’s suspended game, the Bishop Moore defense stood tall again.

The Sentinel Super 16 No. 7 Hornets (2-0) stopped Brantley’s Tramel Johnson short of the goal line on the ensuing twopoint conversion attempt to secure a 35-34 win Saturday over the No. 15 Patriots (0-2).

Lake Brantley went for two and the win rather than attempting an extra-point kick to force overtime after the end-zone catch by Thomas on a halfback pass by Devin Frater.

After giving up 322 yards and 28 points in Friday night’s first half, Bishop Moore allowed only 193 total yards and one score in Saturday’s second half. That effort included a fumble recovery as Lake Brantley was set to score.

“Our guys just hung in there,” Bishop Moore coach Matt Hedrick said. “They moved the ball all night long and we made a game of it in the second half. Momentum changed a little bit.”

The Hornets could also thank big plays from Trillion Coles and Caleb McMillian. Each had 65-yard runs in the first half for scores. Coles rushed for 81 of his 141 yards in the second half.

Quarterback Keanu Kong threw two touchdown passes, including the go-ahead strike to Jake Kiefer early in the fourth quarter.

Lake Brantley quarterback Brett Haecker rushed for 220 yards in the game. He had 126 yards and three scores before halftime.

Lake Brantley led 28-21 when play resumed at 10 a.m. on its home field. and a score.

Legree threw touchdown passes to three different receivers, including two to wideout Brian Gomez, who finished with seven catches for 82 yards. His TD receptions covered 18 and 23 yards.

Oviedo started the scoring on a defensive touchdown by linebacker Antione Ferguson off a fumble by Winter Park running back Tyrone Davis.

The Wildcats responded by posting 42 unanswered points and holding the Lions’ offense in check. Legree threw his fourth TD pass with 1.3 seconds remaining in the half to give the Wildcats a 35-6 halftime advantage.

Oviedo quarterback Morgan Mitchell was limited to just 52 yards passing in the first half, with 50 of that coming on one play. He finished the game 8 for 18 for 111 yards and an interception.
