More than 85 percent of cell towers in a six-county area of Central Florida regained power by midday Wednesday, the Federal Communications Commission reported.

Cable companies and cellular providers have been scrambling to restore service since the storm. The FCC reported that 404 of the 2,711 towers remained without power. That includes Brevard, Lake, Orange, Osceola, Seminole and Volusia counties. Orange has been quickest to recover, with 1,127 of 1,152 towers, or 89.1 percent, having power.

South Florida, Orlando and Jacksonville were three of Sprint’s hardest-hit areas, a spokeswoman said.

She said commercial power outages have slowed recovery but that the company has been refueling onsite generators throughout the day.

Sprint joined other companies to waive text, call and data overage fees for its services, including Sprint, Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile, through Friday. AT&T extended the same deal through Sunday.

Spectrum’s parent firm, Charter Communications, has been coordinating with local power companies as they try to recover, spokesman Joe Durkin said in an email. “As our network relies on commercial power, the (power) loss has been the major cause of Spectrum services not being available,” he said. msantana@orlandosentinel.com
