Drag Brunch not your typical Sunday fare

-

Ah, Sunday. The weekend’s relaxing day of respite, reflection and pounding an absurd amount of orange juice and Prosecco while watching a drag queen twirl in more sequins than your eyes can comprehend.

Oh, what were you planning on doing? Sleeping in?

This is Drag Brunch at Senor Frog’s, a lip-sync show for rattling every last second of debauchery loose from your weekend. Kicking off Sundays at 1 p.m., the restaurant’s International Drive location isn’t hosting a “drink water and prepare to return to work” meal. This is a “Saturday night doesn’t end until I say it does” club event.

Pumping Nicki Minaj and tossing on the glitter Sunday afternoon makes way more sense to Sapphire than doing it the night before. “I see drag as work,” says the 29-year-old performer. “I’d rather do it early and get it over with.”

Sapphire began her career in her native Puerto Rico. She was part of the original crew who this year launched the Senor Frog’s show produced by Voss Events. “This is the perfect gig,” says Sapphire. “I was tired of waking up hungover” from working Saturday nights.

An Orlando resident for nine years, Sapphire arrives hours before the performance already fabulously painted. Makeup, she says, takes her an hour and a half. She comes in a T-shirt and jeans, planning to change into her costume at the venue, “because to drive with the padding and all tucked up is really uncomfortable,” she laughs.

The restaurant is lively before it has even opened. The music is played at club decibels, as important to preparing the atmosphere of the joint as the people wiping down the tables.

The 18-and-older brunch comes in three different packages: the meal ($19.95), all-you-caneat-and-drink ($39.95) and VIP ($69.95). Not to overstate the obvious, but the show is really designed for the latter options, as is completely apparent when host Obscenity comes out and starts making toasts that … well, that live up to her name (too much so to share here).

“I did not get up at 8 a.m. and shave my back for you all to sit there quietly,” Obscenity tells the crowd.

The performance consists of six or seven acts from the five performers, who include Lineysha Sparx, a contestant on “RuPaul’s Drag Race” in 2013. The audience is more than happy to lift their mimosas and yardlong margaritas and cheer for each thumping song and dance.

“We go for high energy performances,” says Sapphire. “We don’t do slow, evening-gown numbers here.”
