Hamilton may miss extended time

- Chris Hays

UCF running back Jawon Hamilton, who suffered what coach Scott Frost called “a dislocation” in his lower right leg during Saturday’s 38-10 victory at Maryland, will likely miss an extended period of time, a source close to the UCF football team told the Sentinel on Sunday.

Hamilton, a sophomore from Homestead South Dade High, suffered the injury on UCF’s fourth play from scrimmage and had to be carried off the field by UCF officials. He left for the locker room and then returned midway through the first half in street clothes and sat with his leg elevated on a bench on the sideline.

Should Hamilton miss the rest of the season, he would be eligible for an NCAA medical hardship, which, if granted, would give him an extra year of eligibility.

“He’s such a good kid and it speaks to who he is to look back on the sideline in the fourth quarter and he’s standing there with crutches and smiling from ear to ear because his team’s winning,” Frost said of Hamilton after Saturday’s game.

After Hamilton went down, Taj McGowan stepped into the main role and helped lead a running back committee — featuring Adrian Killins, Otis Anderson, Cordarrian Richardson and Greg McCrae — that rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries.
