Stingy East River defense blanks Bears

The speed of the passing of and an opportunis­tic defense kept the East River Falcons soaring in the football win column on Tuesday night.

Marion caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from O’Hara and ran 45 yards for another score to lead host East River past Cypress Creek 20-0 in a non-district game. The matchup was a makeup from Sept. 1, when inclement weather forced a postponeme­nt.

East River (3-1) used a stellar defensive performanc­e to record its first shutout of the season. The Falcons held Cypress Creek to just 95 total yards and forced three turnovers, including two fumbles.

The play of Marion and O’Hara sparked an offense that held just a 7-0 lead after the first quarter. O’Hara passed for 118 yards, including a 35-yard TD throw to in the third quarter.

“They played very, very well,” East River coach said. “I’m very surprised, but very happy.”

Cypress Creek (2-2), which crossed midfield only twice, got 62 yards rushing from quarterbac­k Jones senior quarterbac­k

passed for seven touchdowns in a 56-0 football romp past overwhelme­d Agape Christian last week.

Jones has completed 71-percent of his passes, 13 for TDs, going into Friday night’s Class 5A, District 13 showdown against Bishop Moore (3-0) at home. Jones (3-1) top receiver

is averaging 24.25 yards on 20 catches with six TDs.

Oviedo’s girls bowling team, led by junior and sophomore dominated Saturday’s Kegel High School Classic.

The undefeated Lions totaled 2,959 pins to outscore second place Tallahasse­e Lincoln by more than 300 pins.

Vasquez led all girls with a 469 series. Roberts was second at 468 and posted the tourney-high game of 255.
