Lake Mary pounds Oviedo to tie University for district lead

a month of postponed games and a hurricane, the Lake Mary Rams have barreled their way to the top of the Class 8A, District 2 football standings.

Brandon Brown passed for 281 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 79 yards and another score, and Lake Mary’s defense forced three turnovers, including a pick-6, to rout host Oviedo 42-6 on Thursday night and improve to 2-0 in the district.

Lake Mary’s defense set the tone early, forcing a fumble on Oviedo’s second possession inside the Rams’ 5-yard line. The Rams (3-1 overall) scored on their next two possession­s: on a 17-yard pass from Brown to Pedro Rodriguez, and a 10-yard pass from Brown to Sam Whitty on a fade route in the right corner of the end zone.

Oviedo (2-3) broke up the shutout on its next possession when Keonte Coffie scored on a 1-yard TD run. He rushed for 129 yards.

Brown had a 27-yard TD run,

GOLF REPORT Dezmone Williams a 2-yard TD run, and Calvin Davis a 3-yard TD run in the second half for Lake Mary.

The Rams are tied for first with Orange City University, just ahead of Seminole (1-0 in district play).

Lake Mary plays two district games next week: at Lake Brantley (1-4, 0-2) on Monday night at 6 and home vs. Winter Springs (0-4, 0-1) on Friday, Oct. 6.

Cody Braden threw for three touchdowns to help visiting Orange City University win 40-21 against Lyman 40-21 in 8A-2.

Braden completed 11 of 14 passes for 144 yards. Jacob Moss caught two of the touchdowns, scoring on 5 and 22-yard catches for the Sentinel Super 16 No. 7 Titans (2-1, 2-0).

Lorenzo Lingard added 154 rushing yards on 26 carries. He had runs of 17, 17 and 16 yards to set up each Titan first-half touchdown. Lingard’s Wildcat run put University up 7-0 early in the first half.

Tarik McKinzie threw for 178 yards on 10-of-21 passing for Lyman (3-2, 0-2).

Tyrese Juste ran for a 17-yard Greyhounds touchdown early in the third quarter. McKinzie then found Nate Jefferson in the left flat. Jefferson ran right for a 74-yard touchdown that brought the Greyhounds within 19-13.

Braden answered by leading the Titans on a 63-yard scoring march. He capped the drive by throwing a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Moss.

University’s Micah Micken sealed the victory when he answered a Lyman touchdown by returning the ensuing kickoff 49 yards for a TD.

Oviedo cross country coach said his top seven will all run in the same race for the first time this season at Saturday morning’s Hagerty Invitation­al at Seminole State College’s Oviedo campus.

The varsity girls race goes off at 8 a.m., followed by varsity boys.

Oviedo, a prime Class 4A state title contender, ran away from the pack at last weekend’s National Training Center Invitation­al with sophomore placing first individual­ly. The Lions had six runners in the top 18 of a 31-school race. Senior standout

placed third and junior was fifth.

The Hagerty meet has many of the area’s top teams, but not all of the best runners are sure to be on stage.

Mount Dora Christian’s boys, fresh off a victory at last week’s 18-team Sharks Invitation­al in Port Orange, go to the University of Arkansas this weekend to compete in the Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival.
