Seminole stays on streak

The names and faces have changed in Sanford, but the win streaks continue for the Seminole High School football team.

The Seminoles, ranked No. 9 in the Sentinel Super 16, used suffocating defense and a new crop of offensive playmakers en route to a dominating 31-6 effort in a Thursday night road win vs. No. 16 Lake Brantley.

Freshman quarterback Timmy McClain completed 14 of 25 pass attempts for 202 yards and accounted for two touchdowns as Seminole (3-0, 1-0 in Class 8A, District 2) won its 13th straight regular season game dating back to the end of 2015.

“We have a lot of young kids who didn’t get to play as much last year because we had such a senior group, but these kids are good players too,” Seminole coach Don Stark said.

It’s the third win in a row for the Seminoles over county rival Lake Brantley, and the fourth in five meetings since 2014.

Seminole, which reached the state semifinals in 2016, won the regular season matchup last year 35-28 before escaping with a 48-41 win in a rematch in the second round of the state playoffs.

Lake Brantley (1-4, 0-2) trailed 17-0 at halftime on Thursday after being plagued by numerous issues throughout much of the first half.

Trouble with executing the snap between the center and quarterback was amplified by the enormous pressure imposed by Seminole’s defensive front.

Sophomore Michael Bradley scooped up a loose ball on Lake Brantley’s fifth play of the game, leading to a 30-yard field goal by Grayden Krull for an early lead that would not be challenged.

McClain extended a play late in the first quarter before hooking up with Krull for a 65-yard gain on Seminole’s second drive of the night. McClain ran for the pylon on a carry to the right side three plays later for a 12-yard TD.

Sophomore O’Shea Baker went 55 yards the other way on a punt return for a score to open the second quarter.

Sophomore Zion Jackson caught nine passes for a game-high 137 yards for Seminole.
