Death of football

-

I have been a football fan all my life. However, it seems the excitement is over. We are witnessing the death of football.

Let’s be honest: It is violent, always has been. Unfortunately, there have been tragedies in football. Again, that is part of the game, always has been.

However, the new targeting rule is ruining the game. Players are becoming less likely to make a “hit” the way players would have in the past. A good hit today will draw a 15-yard penalty and possibly get the player ejected from that game and part or all of the next one.

The game is fast moving. A player is just trying to get the other player tackled. Those who intentionally attempt to hurt another player should be tossed out of the game. But those plays are obvious and rare.

I was a professional wrestler for 10 years (1978-88). I knew when I entered that profession that it was a violent sport. If I got hurt, I didn’t blame the promoter or the guy I worked against. I probably experienced 10 concussions over my career. But it was my choice to participate.

That used to be the attitude of those who played football. Unfortunately, the politically correct police have changed the game that I and so many others enjoyed watching. This is just the beginning. There will probably be other changes. Chris Whaley Winter Springs
