Vogel wants improvement

-

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that coach

has a long laundry list of items the Orlando Magic will try to correct when they play their second game of the 2017 preseason tonight and host the Dallas Mavericks at Amway Center.

The Magic did a few things well in their opener Monday in Memphis, but as expected from a preseason debut, sloppiness ruled the day.

They made only five of their 32 3-point tries, so some improvement with their shooting and shot selection would be nice.

And Vogel also wants to see better transition defense, a greater focus on boxing out, more effort containing the ball one-onone and what he calls “a collision mentality” at the rim when their defenders have to help.

“I could keep going,” Vogel said. “But let’s just leave it there.”

Vogel readily acknowledges that the Magic did some things well in their 92-84 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies. The Magic, especially the starting five, got out in transition effectively. The team passed up some good shots in search of great shots. Swingman

provided a big energy boost with his defense. And rookie forward asserted himself at the proper times and in the proper ways, scoring a team-high 15 points in 29 minutes.

“With the first unit, the pace was really good,” swingman said. “We shared the ball. That was really good. Now, obviously, we have a long way to go. But I thought it was pretty good. Defensively, on rotations we need to get better. But, honestly, I think it was pretty good for a first game.”

a power forward slated to spend most of the season in the G League, fractured the fourth metacarpal in his left hand in practice Wednesday, team officials said. It’s unclear how much time Payne will miss.

During the offseason, the Magic signed Payne to a two-way contract, which will allow him to spend a small portion of the season in the NBA.

The NBA released its annual survey of league GMs, and although the survey was exhaustive, the Magic received only one mention. GMs were asked to name the rookie who’ll be the best player in five years. The Phoenix Suns’

led the way, receiving 24 percent of the vote. He was followed by the Philadelphia 76ers’

and the Celtics’ who received 21 percent apiece. The Los Angeles Lakers’ and the 76ers’

tied for fourth, with 14 percent of the vote each.

Isaac was named on one ballot. Boston
