Wentz throws 4 TDs as Eagles soar

-

PHILADELPHIA — Carson Wentz looked like the vintage Carson Palmer on Sunday as Wentz threw a career-best four touchdown passes to help the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Arizona Cardinals 34-7. The quarterbacks and teams seem headed in opposite directions. Wentz has the Eagles off to an impressive 4-1 start in his second season while the window could be closing for the 37-year-old Palmer and the Cardinals (2-3).

“The sky's the limit,” Eagles coach Doug Pederson said. “And the key is just staying grounded and staying focused on the next game. These wins, these losses, are shortlived in this business and you have to get yourself ready to go within 24 hours.”

While Philadelphia quickly prepares for a trip to Carolina (4-1) on Thursday, the Cardinals return home to face Tampa Bay (2-2) looking to avoid a downward spiral.

Wentz tossed three scoring passes on three consecutive attempts in the first quarter, including 59 yards to Torrey Smith, 11 yards to Zach Ertz and 15 yards to Trey Burton. He connected with Nelson Agholor for a 72-yard TD on third-and-19 in the third quarter. Wentz is the first Eagles player to throw for three touchdowns in the first quarter.

Aaron Rodgers threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams with 11 seconds remaining to cap a 75-yard drive in just 1:02. Aaron Jones had 19 carries for 125 yards and a touchdown in his first start.

After blowing a 14-point lead in the final eight minutes of regulation and surviving an interception in overtime, the Colts beat the 49ers when Marlon Mack’s 35-yard run set up Adam Vinatieri for a 51-yard field goal.

Josh McCown threw two touchdown passes to lead the surprising Jets over the winless Browns, who fell to 1-20 under coach Hue Jackson.

A.J. Green had a hand in three turnovers but also scored a 77-yard touchdown and had another long catch to set up a score. Green had passes go off his hands and his chest for a pair of interceptions and fumbled after a catch, but he finished with seven receptions for 189 yards.

Cam Newton threw three touchdown passes as the Panthers built a lead big enough to hold off the Lions. The Panthers scored 24 straight points.

Joe Flacco hit Mike Wallace on two deep passes, and the Ravens got a fumble return for a touchdown by Jimmy Smith to beat the Raiders.

Russell Wilson passed for 198 yards and a touchdown, and Earl Thomas forced two of the Rams’ five turnovers as the Seahawks shut out the league’s highest-scoring offense in the second half.

Philip Rivers threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Melvin Gordon with 2:58 to play, and the Chargers rallied to win a game pitting two teams that started the season 0-4.

Alex Smith threw for 324 yards and 3 TDs to help Kansas City remain undefeated with a 42-34 win at Houston in a game in which Texans star J.J. Watt broke his left leg.
