Orlando City majority owner Flávio Augusto da Silva negotiated with his close friend Kaká to be the Lions’ marquee designated player and help the club make its MLS debut. Kaká turned down options to play in Europe and Brazil and became the highest paid player in MLS.

Kaká was greeted in June 2014 by fans who packed the airport and Church Street to welcome him to the city. He was loaned to his hometown club São Paulo for six months in 2014 while the Lions finished making the move from the second-tier USL to MLS.

On March 5, 2015, Kaká scored the Lions’ first MLS goal in stoppage time, forcing a 1-1 draw with New York City FC during Orlando City’s debut match.

The captain started all 29 of his Orlando City appearances in 2015, leading the team with seven assists and finishing second behind Cyle Larin with 10 goals across all competitions.

Kaká’s No. 10 jersey was the third-highest selling jersey in MLS in 2015 and sixthhighest selling jersey in 2016.

In 2016, Kaká was second on the team with nine goals and led the Lions with 10 assists while starting 23 of his 24 MLS appearances.

This season, Kaká has six goals and five assists in 22 appearances.

The Brazilian earned three MLS All-Star appearances, winning all-star MVP honors in 2015.
