Venture beyond typical pizza picks

Not that any of us likely need an excuse to order up some pizza — but it’s National Pizza Month.

We’re lucky to have a variety of pizza options in Central Florida, from oldschool pizza joints to eateries with more quirky pizza options. Here are a few of my favorites: salami) lining the top. It gets a touch of sweet (and more spice) with some Calabrian hot honey.

I feel like a robot as I again repeat this word of advice: order the garlic knots ($8) the moment you sit down. The resulting garlic breath won’t do anyone sitting nearby any favors but they’ll live (unless they’re a vampire).

One bonus: Diners can purchase and open a bottle of wine to go with your pie. The Wine Barn’s staff is happy to wrap any unfinished bottles at the end of your meal.

Fans of simple pepperoni or cheese pizza will find a delicious pie here, but Pizzeria Roberti appeals to the quirky as well. The restaurant has been known to top its New York-style pizza with calamari, foie gras, Caesar salad, and chicken cordon bleu (although not all at once).

Keep an eye on social media to stay updated on any new pies — the specialty pizza lineup is updated daily.

One of its regulars, the braised short rib pizza ($18), is indulgent thanks to caramelize­d onions and fontina cheese.
