Fournette questionable; Yeldon ready

- Ryan O'Halloran

JACKSONVILLE — Jaguars tailback Leonard Fournette missed a third consecutive day of practice Friday with a right ankle injury and is listed as questionable to play Sunday at Indianapolis.

Also questionable are receiver Marqise Lee (knee) and free safety Tashaun Gipson (neck). Both did limited practice work on Friday. Center Brandon Linder (illness) will miss a third consecutive game. Tyler Shatley will start.

Fournette enters Week 7 with an NFL-high six rushing touchdowns and second-most carries (130) and rushing yards (596).

Coach Doug Marrone called determining Fournette's availability for the game “a simple process.”

“The process goes this way: The doctor has the ability to clear or not clear players; the first thing is the doctor has to clear the player,” Marrone said. “The next thing is the player. Once he knows he's cleared, it's up to him whether he's going to play or not. The next thing are the coaches and they say, ‘Hey, if we put him in there, is he good enough to meet our expectations?' ”

Even if Fournette is available, it is possible the Jaguars could activate tailback T.J. Yeldon for the first time this year. He sat out Week 1 with a hamstring injury but has been a healthy scratch the last five weeks, a first for him in his three-year career.

“I told them I'm going to be ready to go at all times,” Yeldon said. “I know the offense.”

Yeldon would serve a purpose on third down — he is probably the best routerunning tailback on the roster and solid in pass protection.

Jaguars long-snapper Matt Overton played for the Colts from 2012 until he was released May 1 and calls Indianapolis his full-time residence.

He will have more 20 friends and family attending Sunday's game.

“It's going to be a little surreal, definitely bittersweet and surreal,” Overton said.

“It's a place I played five years and have a lot of great memories and obviously my coaches are still there and teammates. A special day with great fans and my family.”

One piece of his Colts history remains with Overton — his blue shoulder pads.

“That's my Day One pads from 2012,” he said.

Asked for his favorite Lucas Oil Stadium memories, Overton said: “We beat then-Denver quarterback Peyton Manning a couple times and the 28-point comeback against Kansas City in the 2013 playoffs was pretty awesome.”

Overton was teammates with kicker Adam Vinatieri, who at 44 is the league's oldest current player.

“He's one of a kind,” Overton said. “He does everything with the team and being around the young guys keeps him young.”

Rookie defensive end Dawuane Smoot is averaging 15.8 snaps per game and could be a bigger part of the rotation as the season progresses. He has six tackles (one for lost yardage), two quarterback hits and one quarterback pressure.

“I've been figuring out the game more each week by getting more reps,” Smoot said. “I definitely feel like I'm playing better.”
